Welcome to the 9EY Wiki!

Hello Year 9. This is the Wiki that we will all be working on together as we move through our latest unit. Your contributions here will form part of your assessment mark. You will be working in groups to contribute to a range of topics that we will be covering as we study the unit, When Machines Go Bad. This is the start page where you will find links to the pages that you will be building (under 'Key Terms and Concepts')

What do you need to do?

As we have discussed in class, in your groups you will be required to contribute to one of the following Wiki pages. You have all been assigned an area in which you need to contribute. Ensure that you are addressing the requirements with your contributions, and that you are documenting your progress in your Reflection Logs. Then, at the end of the unit, you will be required to make a short presentation about what you have learned through the unit as well as reflecting on the Wiki experience. Assessment notification and requirements will be first distributed in class. A softcopy will be uploaded to this Wiki once everyone has a hardcopy.

When Machines Go Bad ...

When Machines Go Bad… examines the notion of humanism as depicted within the human/machine binary so often explored in science fiction. In doing so, this unit will ask you to examine and explore your own humanity in terms of its relationship with, and dependency on technology.

Key Terms

The terms that we will be covering (and you will be building pages for) are:

Concept

The concept that we will be focusing on for this unit is representation. We will be looking at how humanism is represented in our core text (a film) and how this representation challenges our understanding and our pre-existing notions of what it means to be a human. You will be asked to reflect on our our text (as well as texts of your own choosing) in order to develop your own understanding and skills related to the areas that we are studying.

Key question

The overarching question that we will be interested in developing an answer to is: How is humanity explored in science fiction texts? This question outlines the core areas that we will be exploring:
  1. Humanism
  2. Representation
  3. Science Fiction

Key learning ideas

Students learn about:
  • How the genre of science fiction depicts a dominant humanist ideology.
Students learn to:
  • Critically and interpretively explore the relationship between technology and humanity as composers and responders.
